Make Math Make Sense: A Lesson Study Partnership

A fully-funded, two-year partnership for one Bay Area elementary school.

What could change if teachers had the time, support, and structure to really understand how students are making sense of math?

Lead by Learning and the Lesson Study Group are inviting one Bay Area elementary school into a two-year partnership designed to transform students’ math learning experiences, strengthen problem-solving, and build your team’s capacity to keep improving instruction together.

Applications open from November 2, 2026 till December 18, 2026 at 5 p.m.

Center Student Thinking

Students deserve math experiences that help them think, reason, solve problems, and see themselves as capable mathematicians.

Through this partnership, your team will learn from student thinking and use what you notice to strengthen instruction together.

Your school will work toward:

  • more meaningful, problem-solving-rich math experiences
  • lessons shaped around what your students actually need
  • stronger student reasoning and mathematical communication
  • more equitable opportunities for students to engage and succeed

Build Teacher Capacity That Lasts

This is about more than improving a few lessons.

Your team will build:

  • a bank of tried-and-tested math lessons tailored to your students
  • a repeatable process for refining and strengthening additional lessons
  • stronger collaborative learning among educators
  • greater teacher and instructional leadership
  • the internal capacity to continue the work long after the partnership ends

You Won’t Do It Alone

Lead by Learning and the Lesson Study Group will partner with your team each step of the way.

We’ll support your educators to learn from students, strengthen instruction, and build the leadership capacity needed to sustain the work over time.

The full partnership is funded at no cost to the selected school.

Is This the Right Opportunity for Your School?

We’re looking for a TK–5 or TK–8 school in the greater Bay Area that:

  • wants to deepen mathematics teaching and learning
  • can bring a school-based team into the work
  • has site leadership committed to collaborative adult learning
  • wants to improve math experiences and outcomes for students who have historically been underserved

Schools that have recently adopted a new math curriculum and are ready to move beyond initial implementation into deeper instructional learning may find this opportunity especially valuable.

Want to Know More Before You Apply?

Join us for a live virtual information session to hear what the partnership will involve and decide whether it could be a good fit for your school.

We’ll talk about:

  • what Lesson Study looks like in practice
  • what participating educators and leaders will experience
  • how Lead by Learning and the Lesson Study Group will support your team
  • what we’re looking for in a partner school
  • how the application and selection process works
