June 08, 2026 – Coaching for Deeper Awareness: Confronting Equity Traps to Improve Teaching

“If only our school had better support services.”
“This student isn’t getting enough practice at home.”
“I’ve tried everything I can think of, and it’s just not working.”

Overwhelmed, hard-working educators often fall into these and other Equity Traps when talking about students’ learning. Bringing colleagues’ attention back to their own practice, and the ways in which their instructional choices directly impact students, is not always easy. A conversation with a supportive, curious colleague or coach can make all the difference. Join this Lead by Learning workshop to discover how effective coaching conversations can strengthen collegial relationships and at the same time improve educators’ decisions for more equitable student learning.

Learning Outcomes:

Grounded in Lead by Learning’s Supportive Challenge framework, this workshop will explore strategies for deepening colleagues’ awareness of equity roadblocks and how to address them, using coaching moves that strengthen, rather than disrupt, collegial relationships. We’ll model, practice, and reflect on strategies for:

  • Identifying and raising awareness around a specific equity issue or concern
  • Partnering with colleagues to better understand what is happening for students
  • Supporting colleagues to name their own next steps for more equitable instruction
  • Planning for a meaningful follow-up to the coaching conversation
  • At the end of the session, you’ll have an opportunity to schedule a 30-minute coaching follow up sesssion with Lead by Learning before August 30, 2026 to return to and support the implementation of new skills.

Who should enroll:

This workshop is designed for leaders of organizations, departments, grade-levels, after-school and summer programs or teams who want actionable ideas to support colleagues to deepen awareness of the equitable impact of their decisions. Whether your primary job is to coach, or you engage in informal coaching conversations with your peers, you will discover ways to jointly question assumptions and engage in deep examination of equity challenges – all while feeling further connected as colleagues.

What to Expect:

You’ll walk away with easy-to-use tools, new ways of thinking about yourself as a coach and thought partner, and a roadmap to creating a culture of Supportive Challenge in your department or team. Join us for this experiential, engaging workshop and transform your experience of addressing equity concerns to improve students’ learning outcomes.
